Boulder Boulder!

This weekend was Boulder-licious beginning with the notorious Seehafer Halloween party. With both our men out of town, Gwen and I coordinate costumes to appear as a pair of fuzzy dice, complete with rear view mirror.

Gwen and her clone both made an appearance Friday night..

The weekend culminated with the Boulder Cup, two cross races put on by Denver-Boulder Couriers courtesy of Colorado's great race promotors, Chris Grealish. With the women's races requiring a UCI license, I traded in the skinsuit for an orange volunteer vest. I found myself assigned to be The Enforcer in the pit. If you're not wrenching for a rides...get out! "Sorry sir, no spectators allowed in this area... Running!!!!" Not a low-stress area, but great for viewing being placed at the top of the gravel hill and just before one of the multiple sandpits. Not a course for the faint of heart. Maybe that's why Tommy D spent the elite race hanging out in his street clothes in the pit holding someone else's bike rather than riding one. Trebon manned up and clipped in despite a cold that left him "hacking like an old lady" according to the Mavic mechanic he was staying with for the weekend.

Taylor Phinney
was also spotted spectating from the bleachers with a gaggle of teenage girls hanging around him. I wonder if it was the Olympic hat, 6'5" frame, or next-Lance predictions that attract them.

Breaker Baker the Candlestick-maker gave the local fans somehting to cheer about, hanging with the lead 4 for the first part of the race, only to have a rear flat and a not-so-smooth bike change. Losing a couple of seconds on a course like that to the likes of Trebon, Wells, and TJ can be fatal, and Baker never recovered. Props to his bleach-blod mohawk. If Chris posted a mo of the week, rather than a mullet, Braker Baker would definitely make the cut.

In the women's field, Georgia Gould schooled the field by riding off the front from the gun. Kelli Emmit got off to a rocky start but moved up quickly flirting with 3rd and just getting pipped at the line. Hope my pre-race recommendations for lines to take up the gravel hill and through the sand pit helped rather than hurt!

The race had a bit of a euro feel (despite the almost-record high 75 degrees) with the food vendors set up. No chips on the menu, but the breakfast burritos and grilled corn-on-the-cob smelled fantastic.

That's it for round 1. I'm beat, but round #2 is this afternoon. Stay tuned for more inside reports.
